Kilimanjaro routes : How to choose one

General information

There are 7 Kilimanjaro routes used by climbers to reach Uhuru Peak. Here are the names of the Kilimanjaro routes: Marangu route, Machame route, Lemosho route, Rongai route, Shira route, Umbwe route and Northern Circuit.

Kilimanjaro routes differ from each other in terms of many aspects such as:
– Views and landscapes: for example not all routes go through the famous Barranco Wall.
– Number of steep sections: For example Rongai route has fewer steep sections compared to Machame route.
– Type of accommodation: for example Marangu route is the exclusive route with huts as accommodation while the rest of Kilimanjaro routes use tents.
-Cost: Each route cost different because of how long it takes, type of accommodation and the number of support crew members needed.

It is because some routes require enough climbing experience and fitness levels. Some route are best taken during dry season and become more challenging during rainy season. While routes such as Marangu and Rongai are best all year round. 

Kilimanjaro routes are well established path/trails to reach the top of the mountain. Whereas Kilimanjaro itineraries are arrangements on how to spend each day and at which campsite to overnight.
